today i woke up before spencer, i love it when this happens because then i get to see his eyes pop wide open when he wakes up. spencer doesn't get the sleepy eyes when he rises his eyes go from being shut to being wide open in a split second and he always looks so confused, and today he without fail made me laugh all day starting with first thing this morning. today i didn't feel so hot, it was good because we didn't any big cruise ships in so it was perfect. just a nice and relaxing day. i'm excited for the busy season i want to break a record and tonight in my fortune cookie it said that i will be able to reach the goal i made so i can't wait. i'll do a day in the life for those who care;
330 am: sun comes up we both wake up, curse the sun and fall back asleep
730 am: (tue, wed & thurs)spencer wakes up again & goes running, i sleep for another 1/2 hour
800 am: breakfast
900 am: we open the doors for business (we live upstairs like jeanies so we walk to work)
the girls get to the store and we do a little pep talk/goal session for 120 seconds, we clean and prep until 1030 when the rush comes
1030am-330pm: non stop australian accents, free color changing rings, nail polish, coupon, t-shirt, hairclip frenzie
from 330-500: we all take a breather, eat some no bake goodies i whip up for the crew then fold, fold, fold, straighten and restock endless t-shirts!
500-1100: the sun is still up so we usually are outside most of this time, hiking, biking, walking to the grocery store, going to the beach, sight seeing, anything we can think of. the night is still young when we get off work. we sell a t-shirt that says "rockin to the midnight sun" and we do.
we work maybe 30 hours a week and we love it. on days that big cruise ships come in (big meaning capacity of 2000+) we open the store from 9-5. on non cruise ship days or small cruise ship (-1000 capacity) we open from 10-2. we usually get 2 big cruise ships a week the westerdam and the oosterdam they are holland america liners. they have shopping guides that are onboard meaning they live on the ship and they tell the passengers to shop with delsol! we've met sooo many new people who have such adventurous lives! can you imagine living on a cruise ship? sounds fun but probably gets pretty old pretty fast.
we have learned so much in the short month we've been here. yeah can you believe it? we're a few days short of a month in sitka. when we got here we really had no idea what we were doing. we were like lost puppies trying to figure our way home. i remembered something my grandpa jack used to say "you gotta plug your nose jump in and see if you come up for air." i thought of that phrase often when we were trying to hire when we first got up here, we had no luck and thought we were never going to find someone. the night before we opened the store for the first time for a big cruise ship we miraculousy hired bessie and just loved her. hiring has been a breeze since. it took us almost 2 hours to close up the store send all the reports count all the cash that first day, we were so nervous, it should take about 10 minutes! i had no idea how to talk "business" with the cruise shopping guides, set goals and talk "numbers" spencer was a natural at it, i just copy what he says and we make a great team! sitka has been good to us, showing us the ropes of real life and a real good time. we have much to learn in the time we have in sitka!
much love,
olivia & skittles
